In this blog we’ll break down notable projects from top health systems in the state.

BayCare Health broke ground on more than $150 million worth of construction in Florida in early 2020, making them the leading health system for new construction in the Sunshine State so far this year.

But the Central Florida-based health system isn’t the only major health system with projects under construction. Advent Health and HCA also have several projects underway.

1. BayCare Health 

Thanks to a new patient tower in Saint Petersburg, BayCare Health broke ground on three new projects totaling $153 million since JanuaryAt $152 million, the St. Anthony’s Hospital Patient Tower is expected to be complete in 2022.  

The four-story, 143,000-square-foot, 90-bed patient tower that will be built on top of the existing three-story hospital building. The project will also include renovations to the ground, first, second and third floors at the main hospital, with more room and better access for cardiology services, pre-admission testing for surgical patients, new classrooms for education, a new electrical plant and an expanded loading dock.

The kitchen and cafeteria will move to the first floor and a new entry lobby is being created. 

BayCare has 15 hospitals in the state also has active plans to build a 60-bed acute care facility in Wesley Chapel, FL, and they broke ground on a $45 million expansion to their hospital in Safety Harbor.

Saint Joseph Nuclear Medicine Renovation  Plans call for a 818-square foot-renovation of the existing hospital’s nuclear medicine department on the first floor. Renovations will include equipment replacement in the existing nuclear medicine room, finish upgrades, relocated toilet, and relocation of the existing stress lab.  A building permit was issued in December 2019, and although the project is facing some delays due to Covid 19, the project is expected to be finished in August 2020. 
Baycare Urgent Care Renovations  Plans call for renovations to the 4,573-square-foot Baycare Urgent Care in Lakeland, FL.  This project went out to bid in February 2020. 

 

 

2. AdventHealth 

AdventHealth, formerly known as Adventust Health Systems, has one substantial projects underway in Florida totaling $84 million. 

The bigger of the two projects is an expansion at their Kissimmee hospital.

The project call for a 123,000-square-foot, 80-bed expansion on top of the hospital’s existing three-story patient tower. A building permit application was submitted in February 2020 and is expected to take two years. 

Based in Altamonte Springs, FL, AdventHealth has hospitals in nine states, although Florida is their biggest market with 30 hospitals and free-standing emergency departments in the SunShine State. 

Planning is underway for a new freestanding, hospital-based emergency room with 24 beds and a two-story 15,000-square-foot medical office building to house a variety of physicians and specialty clinics. Work is to include space for pediatrics, adult care, imaging and clinic labs. 

The project has been reviewed by the Port Orange Staff Development Review Committee in April 2020. 

AdventHealth is also a part of the new Orlando Magic Training Facility tentatively scheduled to start in June 2020. 

Planning is underway on the AdventHealth’s Flagler Health+ Village in Saint Johns, FL. Phase I of that project is tentatively scheduled to start in the summer, while two other phases in planning are still in planning.

The health system also has plans for an emergency room expansion in Winter Park, FL. 

 

3.HCA Healthcare (Hospital Corporation of America)

 It should be no surprise to see HCA on this list. Not only are they one of the largest health systems in the country, they are also one of the largest companies in the country, having been ranked No. 67 on Fortune’s 2019 list. 

The Nashville-based company has four projects in early construction, the largest of which is a freestanding emergency department in Pensacola. 

Work calls for a 10,820-square-foot freestanding emergency department. There will be 11 private exam rooms, laboratory and diagnostic imaging services. The project was announced in 2019 and construction should be complete in fall 2020. 

HCA also has an ambulatory surgery center under construction in Frisco, TX and a new parking garage for the Women’s Hospital of Texas in Houston.

Back to Florida, HCA broke ground on a freestanding ER in Panama City, FL in November and a new patient tower at the Orange Park Medical Center in Orange Park, FL.

They also have projects in planning in Virginia, California and Georgia.

Twin Cities Hospital ER Addition  Plans call for the construction of a 2,650-square-foot emergency room addition to the hospital as well as renovations to existing space. Work includes seven treatment rooms, a waiting room, a new chapel and a new CT machine.  ConstructionWire confirmed that this project is under construction in April 2020 
Lakeland Freestanding ER  Plans call for the demolition of existing structures for the construction of a 10,920-square-foot, freestanding emergency room.  A building permit was issued on 1/24/20 and ConstructionWire was able to confirm that construction is underway. 
Fort Walton Beach Medical Center Freestanding ER  Plans call for the construction of a new, freestanding emergency room for the Fort Walton Beach Medical Center. Work is to include space for 11 exam rooms, pediatric care, CT and X-ray imaging, and laboratory space.  This project was approved by the county in late 2019 and construction plans were submitted for review. 

 

 

4. Community Health Systems 

Community Health Systems has broken ground on an expansion of a 56,214-square-foot behavioral health addition at the Bayfront Health Punta Gorda, which is expected to be complete in 2021.

Community Health System operates in 18 states and is affiliated with more than 100 hospitals. 

Other notable projects by Community Health Systems is a replacement hospital in La Porte, IN, which should be complete before the end of the year.

In Florida, they have two large projects in planning, the Venice Regional Bayfront Health Hospital in Venice, FL and a surgical suite expansion at Melbourne Regional Medical Center. 

 

5. Ascension Health 

Ascension Healththe second largest health system in the country, is renovating part of the first floor of The Studer Family Children’s Hospital for a 12-bed pediatric oncology unit. Construction should be complete before the end of 2020. 

The health system is also renovating office space in Jacksonville and is expecting to break ground soon on a freestanding ER in Navarre, FL. Planning is underway for St. Vincent’s St. Johns County Hospital in Saint Augustine, FL. 

Ascension, which is affiliated with 151 hospitals, has many projects underway or in planning around the country. They also started construction on the Dell Children’s Speciality Pavilion & Parking Garage in Austin, TX. 

 

6. Baptist Health

 Baptist Health is renovating 4,867 square feet within Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville. A building permit was issued in December 2019. Also in Florida, Baptist has plans for an ER/Urgent Care facility in Navarre, FL. That clinic should be open in early 2021. Baptist also has a 150,000-square-foot medical campus as part of a larger mixed-use development in Saint Johns, FL in planning, along with a medical and wellness complex in Yulee, FL and construction of a hospital with an emergency room, an in- and out-patient surgery center and retail and business on 38 acres with up to 525,000 square feet of space in Saint Augustine, FL. 

 

7. Nemours Children’s Health System 

 For Nemours Children’s Health System, construction is underway on upgrades to the first-floor lobby and eighth-floor pulmonary clinic in Jacksonville, FL. A building permit was issued in February 2020. Nemours also has a cardiac facility under construction on their Orlando, FL hospital and they also have projects in planning in Delaware. 

  

8. J Ben Watkins Private Foundation, Inc. 

 J Ben Watkins Private Foundation, Inc. has a building permit under review for a a 5,000-square-foot residential-style rehabilitation facility with 16 beds, eight full baths, a commercial kitchen, a dining hall, a community room and therapy rooms in Tallahassee, FL 

 

9. University of Miami Health System 

 University of Miami Health System recently leased 7,000 square feet for a new medical specialties center in West Palm Beach. The facility will house office space for urology, gastroenterology, cardiology, neurology, and dermatology.. University of Miami Health System is finishing up a proton therapy center in Miami, while planning is underway on a cancer center expansion In Deerfield Beach, FL and a Premier Concierge Medical Facility in Palm Beach, FL. 

  

10. Mayo Clinic Health System 

 Last but not least, Mayo Clinic Health System received a building permit for renovations to the second floor of their Jacksonville, FL facility, but the Minnesota-based health system has plans to begin construction soon on a six-story, 120,000-square-foot building that will have space for eight operating rooms called Mayo North planned in Jacksonville, FL, and work should begin on an Integrated Oncology Facility, also in Jacksonville.
