How Your Business Can Survive and Thrive During COVID-19

COVID-19 got you down?

Last week we were all wondering when winter would end and now it seems like the world is ending.

But it’s not.

This will pass and as long as we take steps to stay safe and take care of each other, things WILL get better.

As a popular meme going around alludes to:

“Our grandparents had to deal with world wars and bombs, you just have to deal with your couch.”

Ok, point taken.

Still, as day 3 of my family’s self-isolation kicks off I’m already a little stressed out.

Kids at the house take work from home to a whole ‘nother level.

As I sit here writing this, I’ve already:

  • Cleaned oatmeal off a number of walls
  • Stepped on two Legos
  • Cut my daughter out of some poopy pants (potty training during quarantine, what could go wrong?)
  • Created some homemade watercolors from fruits and veggies for playtime
  • Tended to another potty accident, with another bath given. (It’s not even 10:00 yet)
  • Stepped on another Lego.

This will be tough.

But it’s doable.

Let’s lean on each other and remember to ask for and accept help during this challenging time.

Here are my 7 tips for business survival and personal sanity during COVID-19:

1. Remember that scared competitors make market movements easier.

Stick to your guns and your business could actually grow while others are consumed with worry and nervous thumb twiddling.

Stay diligent.

Stay focused.

No crying.

2. Squeeze more out of conversations, inquiries and website visits.

How to Survive and Thrive During COVID-19
  • Use this time to squeeze more out of conversations, inquiries and website visits.
  • Use tools like: Hotjar to track user behavior, LeadFeeder to track new visitors
  • Audit your call logs for missed calls from potential prospects
  • Make sure your lead magnets are strong, so that you can convert as many site visitors as possible.
  • Analyze or implement your retargeting strategy and be a resource for new visitors.
  • Purse strings will get tighter. Create CONTENT with proof and reassurances that your products and services solve problems.
  • Video will be your friend.  Use Zoom or Loom to reach out with video when face to face won’t work.

Now’s the time to refine, not recline.

3. Get creative and find new ways to help your customers and partners before they ask.

Dig in and get creative with existing customers / partners to find ways to help that aren’t about your bottom line.

Play the long game.

Be a resource.

4. Support your staff

  • Support staff appropriately. Working from home is extremely stressful for parents.
  • Encourage staggering delivery of certain work beyond 9-5 as some parents are adjusting to young ones at home during the day.

Most of those reports can wait to be delivered after 7 PM anyway.

5. Continue to market your business.

  • Continue to market your business.  You don’t grow through attrition.
  • Use this time to research and double down on your highest ROI channel. For many of us, that’s email.
  • What are your open and click through rates?
  • Do you have a solid welcome email sequence that pushes new leads down funnel?

Continue to communicate with prospects and customers so you stay top of mind.

6. Take care of yourself.

Please take care of yourself.

Added stressors can weaken your immune system and make you more susceptible to getting sick.

Make sure to take breaks, eat all of your meals and drink lots of fluids.

Sleep! Your commute just got shorter. Take advantage.

Remember to stick to your exercise routines.
Let the kids join in and you’ll also help cement some healthy habits as well.

7. Don’t work in your PJs.

Finally, don’t work in your PJs. At least not every day.

It’s super tempting to stay in that robe ( I say this while writing half-dressed in my robe)… but a freshly washed/ shaven face, a collared shirt and actual clothes will help your body remember there is work to be done, goals to be achieved, deals to be closed and clients to serve.
